Cartier Santos Galbee
Yes it is a quartz and yes it is a small watch. This Cartier Santos Galbee however, is an iconic piece and for just below 2,000 Euro, you can find a number of them for sale on Chrono24. The Santos Galbee was also available with an automatic movement, but it takes a few more coins to purchase one of those, especially in good condition. Many people think Gérald Genta had to do with the design of these Santos (Galbee) watches, but that has never been confirmed.
The use of screws, the hexagon crown, it all adds up to the era this watch was introduced (late 1970s). There are a number of combinations available with regards to the dial and the materials. A bi-color Santos Galbee is an interesting alternative as well, with its gold bezel and bracelet screws. Keep an eye on the dimensions of these watches, they were available in several sizes and most offered pieces under 2,000 Euro are rather small.
Enthusiast’s corner: Rare or exceptional timepieces
MB&F HMX
Maximilian Büsser and Friends have this collection called Horological Machines. Other than the more conventional Legacy Machine models (a collection that was introduced later on), the Horological Machines (HM) are more out-of-this-world timepieces and could clearly be regarded as pieces of art. The question is whether you would use this timepiece every day, or just for special occasions. It is a conversation starter to say the least, even with those who aren’t specifically interested in watches.
The HMX is a ‘drivers’ watch, based on those vintage pieces (Amida Digitrend for example) that will make life easier when you have to tell time while your hands are on the steering wheel. This titanium version is one of the few variations that MB&F made of this watch and is limited to 20 pieces only. The mechanical movement and time indicating discs can be observed via the top crystal as well as the case/back crystal.
Steal of the week: Great value for the money
Omega Seamaster 300M
Introduced in 1993 and still in production is the Seamaster 300M collection. The most famous model perhaps being the 2531.80 (‘James Bond’) took away a bit of the shine of the later reference 2254.50. However, with its black dial and Speedmaster-style bracelet it has perhaps a more timeless appearance and favored by many. It was a time when Omega didn’t produce their in-house movements yet nor installed co-axial escapements in (almost) all of their watches. It has an ETA powered caliber 1120 movement, helium valve, 300 meters water resistance and an uni-directional diving bezel.
A no-nonsense piece that will never go out of style. These older discontinued Seamaster 300M watches are getting more sought-after and some even whisper that they are sleeper-watches. They slightly increase in price over the past couple of years already. You might want to jump in now.
